Legal Requirements

New regulations on web accessibility came into force in Germany on June 28, 2025. These are based on EU Directive 2016/2102 and the European Accessibility Act. They apply not only to public institutions, but also to private companies and agencies that offer digital services and products.

An important point of the legislation is:

  • WCAG 2.1 Level AA compliance: The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines define standards for making websites, apps, and tools accessible. These include, for example, text alternatives for images, subtitles for videos, appropriate keyboard navigation (e.g., using arrow keys), and a clearly structured page layout.
